Baseball was the sport I played the longest throughout my childhood. I didn’t care for football or being tackled, but something about standing in the outfield chewing sunflower seeds suited my needs.
When it came to batting, I was an average player. Sometimes I would strike out, sometimes I’d hit the ball and sometimes I’d walk being hit by the ball thrown by the pitcher. At the end of the day, a base is a base.
Now that I have growing children, hobbies related to sports become more fun as a father. My children aren’t at the age where I can throw a baseball with speed, but with constant practice, I’m sure my 6-year-old will be able to catch a faster ball over hand instead of under hand.
My daughter has all of the desire to perform her best. Citing failure as a reason to press on, my daughter always tries her best and doesn’t give up. I teach her failure is okay because we will not win every game or do our best during every practice. What I teach are fundamentals with all the fun.
After school, I usually play a sport with my kids. Our go-to sport has always been soccer since my kids play in leagues, however, I’ve begun introducing them to the art of baseball.
During the 2021 summer, we would go to different baseball fields and I would let them take turns at the role of batting. They loved the idea that once you hit the ball, that you run base to base, exercising caution to not being tagged out by whoever is holding the baseball.
Today, like any day, my daughter amazed me with her talented skillset in pitching and catching.E
