As a DoorDasher, waiting on restaurants who aren’t ready kills productivity

Nothing is worse than accepting a DoorDash that takes longer than expected. That is exactly what I am running to at this current time due to waiting on a restaurant who didn’t have an order ready by the time I arrived for pickup.

I picked up a DoorDash from Outback Steakhouse and unfortunately enough for me, I was closer to the delivery address than the destination of pickup. It took me about 13 minutes to get to Outback from where I received the order.

On the way to Outback, I alerted the customer that I was en route to the destination and would update them after receiving the order. Here’s the unfortunate part. When I got to the restaurant, the order was still not ready. Only four things are on the customer’s order and none of them were started due to a possible out-of-stock item.

After waiting in my car for 5 minutes before going inside of the store, I was told that the order wasn’t even in the process of being made. Apparently the restaurant was out of something, but after bringing it to the server’s attention, they pushed the order through. Now, here is the waiting game. This is the unfortunate part for people like me who expect restaurants to be ready by the time I arrive for pickup.

I picked up this order at 5:56pm.

I arrived at 6:10pm.

The order was restarted at 6:14pm.

I’m waiting for the order and it’s 6:45pm.

It’s almost been an hour, waiting on this one order. This order, unless the customer tips higher for me waiting for their order, is $28.50. That’s still a good hourly, HOWEVER, I could have already had this delivered 20 minutes ago if it were ready.

Any factors that cause delays such as traffic or food still in progress, is detrimental for people who are delivery drivers. We are at the mercy of the restaurant preparing the order. I’ve discussed in prior videos and posts that I sympathize with employees in the fast food industry. I’ve come to terms with the fact that orders will not be ready by the time I arrive. However, now I must make a decision on waiting longer for this high-paying order, or look for other orders.

The current order I am waiting on is a high-tipped order. It would be a waste of my time to leave the restaurant, even though I am currently waiting for this order to be ready. I’m currently still waiting for the order to be ready 20 minutes after it was supposed to have been made.

What would you do?
